In the Gospel Jesus offers a strict order to follow Him. How do we do that, especially when others are not?
In the reading from Genesis, Abraham bargains with God over the city of Sodom. He asks God if He would spare the city if there are fifty, five less than fifty, forty, thirty, twenty, and then finally ten innocent people in the city. One gets the feeling that Abraham will even bargain with God down to five, four, three, etc. Ultimately God will not find ten innocent souls and Sodom and Gomorrah will be destroyed.
What motivates us to follow Jesus, to do the right thing even when it seems like no one else cares? What moves us to do what is right when we feel like we are living in “Sodom and Gomorrah?”
Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote a very moving article from jail on this very subject. He said, “Cowardice asks ‘Is it safe?’ Expedience asks ‘Is it politic?’ Vanity asks ‘Is it popular?’ There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, politic, nor popular, but one must take it because it is right.”
How often does our morality follow what is P.C. rather than Jesus?
