The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrated on August 15, is a Holy Day of Obligation for us as Catholics. On this day, we honor Mary’s Assumption into heaven, body and soul, at the end of her earthly life. Her Assumption is a sign of hope for us, reminding us of God’s promise of eternal life. We come together in Mass and prayer, asking for Mary’s intercession and celebrating her role in salvation history.
We can celebrate the Feast of the Assumption in several meaningful ways:
- Attend Mass – Since it’s a Holy Day of Obligation, the best way to honor Mary is by participating in the Eucharist.
- Pray the Rosary – Reflect on Mary’s role in salvation history, especially the Glorious Mysteries, which include her Assumption.
- Offer a Marian Consecration – Renew or begin a devotion to Mary, entrusting ourselves to her care.
- Read Scripture – Meditate on passages like Luke 1:46-55 (Mary’s Magnificat) or Revelation 12:1, which is often associated with her Assumption.
- Display a Marian Image – Place a statue or image of Mary in your home and light a candle in her honor.
- Share a Meal with Loved Ones – Since this is a joyous feast, gathering with family or friends for a meal is a beautiful way to celebrate.
- Visit a Marian Shrine – If possible, make a pilgrimage to a church or shrine dedicated to Mary.
